Irish Eyes Keep Smiling

Darren Clarke wins the British Open

Last year it was Graeme McDowell at the U.S. Open.  Last month it was Rory McIlroy at the U.S. Open.  And, now, it's Darren Clarke at the British Open.  There must be something in the Jameson's, eh?.  You know, the famed Irish Whiskey.  How else can one explain the streak of golfers from Northern Ireland winning three of the last six Majors?  For Darren, his first Major came on his 20th attempt in the British Open.  Not bad for a guy who, at 42, is the first player in his 40's to win a Major since Vijay Singh's 2004 PGA Championship.  Americans Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson gave it a run but, Phil started to miss short putts at the turn while Dustin double-bogeyed No. 14.  Regardless, when it was over, the self-proclaimed "Normal Bloke from North Ireland" was the one hoisting the claret jug.

HackMan takes the third event

Everyone submitted a fresh foursome for the British Open but, only one had the winning combination.  With a foursome total of 1116, HackMan claimed the trophy (i.e., the token cash) for the third event.  Like Mickelson and Johnson were to Clarke, three other foursomes were within three strokes of the winner.  GreenLegion was among these, putting up a much better challenge than his U.S. Open which was 54 strokes off the pace.  Contest leaders MasterBators and PuttThis 3 kept the heat on each other, matching foursome scores at 1118.  All and all, the competition was much stiffer this time around with everyone being within 30 strokes of the winner.  Take a look at the tables below to see Current Standings and Final Results for the British Open.

Foursomes for the final event -- The PGA Championship -- will be due by Noon on Saturday, August 13th

Just one event remains -- The PGA Championship which will be played during the week of August 8th at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia.  MasterBators and PuttThis 3 remain neck & neck at the top of the standings.  Two other foursomes are less than ten strokes back from these leaders which will help to keep things interesting.  Keep in mind that we pay out a little token of cash for winning an event and that rest is saved for that Season Champion award which goes to the foursome with the lowest total through all four Majors (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship).  Be sure to check back in August.
