Rory McIlroy wins the U.S. Open

If there is anyone who could help the Golf Nation get past the recent silencing of "The Roar," it just might be a certain gentleman from Northern Ireland.  On a weekend during which Tiger Woods would be watching a Major, one of golf's newest young guns would be winning it.  Completing the wire-to-wire finish he failed to accomplish in April at The Masters, Rory McIlroy won his first Major and became the youngest golfer to win the U.S. Open since Bobby Jones in 1923.  Rory finished the tournament at 16 under which was eight strokes better than anyone else in the field.  The victory moves Rory to fourth in the golf rankings and now makes him a favorite to win the British Open.

Team Captains make the difference -- PuttThis 2 takes Event 2

Just about every one of our GolfUnlimited foursomes for U.S. Open had Rory McIlroy penciled in.  While that proved to make things tight, it would be the choice of a Team Captain which would make the difference.  Hole-in-One 1 and PuttThis 2 had three identical golfers: Rory's McIlroy and Sabbatini and Y.E. Yang.  And while Hole-in-One 1 had Retief Goosen while PuttThis 2 had Dustin Johnson, here too their scores canceled each other out since both Johnson and Goosen finished with identical 285's.  Total foursomes scores for both came in at 1117 which set up a tie-breaking situation.  That's where we look at the choice for Team Captain, Hole-in-One 1 having gone with Yang while PuttThis 2 held fast to Mr. McIlroy.  Rory's total of 268 was ten strokes better than Yang's 278 and that is what gives the Event 2 win to PuttThis 2.  Congrats to PuttThis 2 who will take a little event cash for her victory.  Take a look at the tables below to see Current Standings and Final Results for the U.S. Open.

Next Up: The (British) Open

Foursomes for the third event -- British Open -- will be due by Noon on Saturday, July 16th

Two down and two to go -- our next event is the (British) Open to be played at Royal St. George's in England.  We already know Rory McIlory is going in as the favorite.  As for us here at GolfUnlimited, we have a two-way tie for the lead in the Current Standings: MasterBators and PuttThis 3.  Three other GU foursomes are less than ten strokes back, though: BassAckwards, Hole-in-One 1 and PuttThis 2.  Keep in mind that we pay out a little token of cash for winning an event and that rest is saved for that Season Champion award which goes to the foursome with the lowest total through all four Majors (Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, and PGA Championship).  So if you plan to make a move, your next best shot is less than a month away.  See you in July at St. George's.
