Brick-tory!

You wouldn't think there'd be a problem with being home to the world's largest stadium but, if you're from Indianapolis, that's probably not how you viewed the matter on Sunday.  You see, even though something like 140,000 people were in the stands for the Brickyard 400, when you have seats for a quarter of a million people, it looks every bit of empty.  Good thing Jamie McMurray didn't get distracted by the silence of 100,000 MIA fans.  And even a better thing that he took only two tires near the end of the race.

Jamie's boss, Chip Ganassi, had to feel pretty good going into the race.  His primary driver, Juan Montoya, was on the pole and looked to be a solid contender for becoming first driver in racing history to win both the IRL Indy 500 and the NASCAR Brickyard 500.  But after taking four tires in a late-race pit stop, Juan came out stuck in traffic and, while trying to race back to the front, hit the wall and open up the rear of his car like a bad can of soup.  It was at that moment that Chip probably thought he would remain tied in the history books with car owner Roger Penske, both having won NASCAR's Daytona 500 and IRL's Indy 500 in the same year but neither having added a Brickyard 400 win to make it a hat trick.

But then we notice Jamie McMurray still out on the track, near the front, because he only took two tires.  He needed to drive around Kevin Harvick and, once he did, there was nothing between him and those bricks.  Becoming only the third driver in NASCAR history to win both the Daytona 500 and the Brickyard 500 in the same season, Jamie wins the race and makes his car owner Chip Ganassi the first Triple Crown winner in U.S. automotive racing.

Here at RacingUnlimited, things were a bit more pedestrian.  No 800 scores.  Heck, no 700 scores.  There were three "two-fer" stats, though.  Blazing Saddles got the checkers in both Allison (with a 688) and Unlimited (only team scoring above 300) which gave him second wins in each of those divisions.  In Yarborough, also getting her second win of the season was Ruhound with a 638.  BassAckwards still has the point in Allison and Taz 3 is vanguard in Yarborough.  We're six races away from the Chase but, only five weekends away from ArmChairSportsClub's annual racing party.  Keep sending in those lineups and, if your creative juices are oozing, you might want to send in an entry for the contest discussed below.  See you in the pits.

It needs a new name

The NASCAR-themed party the Commish throws each year has a new date and, now, it needs a new name.  Previously known as the Brickyard Barbeque, this party will be held on Sunday, September 5 -- the day before the Labor Day holiday.  There is a race that day -- a night one in Atlanta -- and all those silly contests will still be played, including Street Bowling.  To make things interesting, the Commish will make a little contest out of this: Submit a name for this September 5th race and, if the Commish likes your entry the best, he'll pay for your RacingUnlimited 2011 team.  Email your entry to armchairsportsclub@hotmail.com in the next couple weeks.  Keep it short & sweet and clean & clever.
